By fasted, I’m referring to having not consumed any food prior to exercising and your stomach being empty. Fasted cardio is an effective fat loss strategy and today I will explain to you why this is actually the case.
When you work out at say lunchtime, late afternoon or during the night, as you perform cardio your body is calling on its glycogen reserves to fuel your bodies movements during that exercise period.
Glycogen is just a fancy word for stored carbohydrates which can come in 3 main types which is:
When you work out any time after breakfast when any of the 3 nutrients above have been consumed, even if that’s only mid morning or lunchtime, your body will first tap into and use all those carbohydrates to fuel your workout, and will either require very intense cardio, or very prolonged cardio to eventually recruit your bodies fat reserves to fuel the workout and burn them away.
Evolution has programmed our bodies to recruit our fat reserves as a last resort which is an instinctive, evolutionary response in the event that there was a food famine and the body will have the most energy dense nutrient source at its disposal to survive the famine.
When you’ve just woken up and likely been asleep for an average of 6 to 8 hours, it’s likely that depending on how closely you consumed food before going to bed, you have not eaten any food for between 6 and as long as 10 hours or even more.
When you first wake up, your body is free of the calories and energy that you will have in your system at all other times of the day and night. So when you work out first thing in the morning on an empty stomach, your body will dip straight into those fat reserves that the body instinctively stores for times of famine.
This is not unsafe though as we are no longer living in an environment when a full scale food famine is actually likely to occur. So by allowing your body to be able to directly access the fat reserves without having to first burn through the glycogen reserves, this will result in more effective fat loss for your body.
It is even suggested that doing cardio on an empty stomach first thing in the morning is up to 3 times as effective for fat burning than if you did the same amount of cardio at the same intensity later in the day.
